# Opposition to Military Rule

After General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq overthrew and later executed her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto endured detention and exile while assuming leadership of the PPP. She returned to mass support and won the 1988 election after Zia's death.
