Teaching to Transgress presents education as a practice of freedom built through critical participation, attention to experience, and shared responsibility in the classroom. hooks drew from Black feminist thought and liberatory pedagogy while insisting that teaching involve the whole person.

Engaged pedagogy does not eliminate rigor or disagreement. It asks teachers to examine domination within educational spaces and to create conditions in which students can develop critical voices.
