Coalition Politics and Gay Rights

After the great civil-rights mobilizations of the early 1960s, Rustin continued working through labor, electoral politics, international human rights, and democratic coalition building. His strategic outlook emphasized alliances broad enough to turn movement demands into governing power.

Later in life he spoke more publicly for gay rights, including testimony for a New York gay-rights bill. That advocacy connected his own experience of marginalization with a wider commitment to equal citizenship.
