# Bayard Rustin (@bayard-rustin)

Bayard Rustin was an American organizer and strategist who helped make nonviolent mass action a durable instrument of the civil-rights movement. A Quaker and pacifist, he brought experience in protest, coalition work, and logistics to campaigns that linked racial equality with labor and economic justice.

Rustin is especially associated with organizing the 1963 March on Washington and advising Martin Luther King Jr. on nonviolence. Because he was openly gay in a hostile era, allies sometimes kept him away from public prominence even while relying on his strategic work.
