# A Collaborative Discovery

Advanced LIGO directly detected gravitational waves from merging black holes in 2015. The Nobel Prize singled out Barish, Weiss, and Thorne, while the published discovery represented work by the much larger LIGO and Virgo collaborations.

Barish’s particular legacy is building the organizational bridge between a compelling prototype idea and a reliable observatory. The achievement depended on thousands of contributions whose coordination was itself part of the experiment.
