# The Thinker: From Poet to Icon

The Thinker began as The Poet, a smaller figure positioned above the Gates and associated with Dante contemplating the underworld. Exhibited separately and later enlarged, it acquired broader meanings of thought and creative struggle.

Its tense toes, back, fist, and compressed posture make thinking bodily labor rather than calm abstraction.
