# Dhamma and Public Government

Ashoka’s dhamma promoted restraint, respect for parents and teachers, generosity, humane treatment, and regard among religious communities. It functioned as an ethical vocabulary for a diverse empire rather than a detailed program of Buddhist doctrine.

Officials and inscriptions helped broadcast these priorities. The surviving pillar fragment demonstrates how royal moral claims were embedded in durable public objects and administrative geography.
