Ashoka supported Buddhism and became central to later accounts of its expansion. His inscriptions also urge respect across sects, making religious patronage and imperial pluralism parts of the same policy.

Modern knowledge of Ashoka was reconstructed by connecting inscriptions, archaeology, and literary traditions. His legacy therefore depends as much on how evidence was rediscovered and interpreted as on the later ideal of the peaceful Buddhist king.
