Optical tweezers allow researchers to hold and move microscopic particles without mechanical contact. Their forces are small and precisely measurable, making them suitable for delicate systems.

Ashkin and collaborators extended trapping to viruses, bacteria, and living cells, especially after using infrared light to reduce damage. The instrument turned a principle of radiation pressure into a practical laboratory handle.
