Light Can Push
Photons carry momentum, so light can exert force even though the effect is tiny. Ashkin studied how laser beams accelerate and guide small transparent particles and demonstrated optical trapping in a series of experiments beginning around 1970.
The crucial advance was a tightly focused single beam whose intensity gradient pulls a particle toward the focus while radiation pressure pushes it along the beam. Balanced correctly, those forces create a stable three-dimensional trap.
