Researchers now use optical tweezers to study molecular motors, DNA, cell mechanics, colloids, and many other systems. The tool can both manipulate an object and measure the minute forces acting on it.

Ashkin’s achievement depended on Bell Labs’ experimental culture and numerous collaborators who developed lasers, trapping methods, and applications. His Nobel recognized an enabling technology whose scientific reach grew far beyond its original setting.
