# Sorting Stellar Spectra

Photographic plates spread starlight into spectra marked by absorption lines. Cannon became extraordinarily fast and consistent at recognizing recurring patterns and assigning stars to classes.

She reordered and simplified earlier lettered categories into a temperature sequence. The mnemonic survives, but the deeper achievement was a reproducible system enabling astronomers to compare enormous datasets.
