# Authority Within Constrained Work

Harvard hired women as lower-paid computers while limiting their academic status and access. Within that constrained structure, Cannon developed international authority in classification and advocated opportunities for women in science.

Her story is neither simple exclusion nor uncomplicated institutional generosity. Women gained a rare scientific workplace while their essential analysis was classified and compensated below men’s work.
