Deaton's later research links income, education, mortality, pain, happiness, and social conditions, treating health as both an outcome and a dimension of welfare. He has also argued for methodological pluralism and cautioned against treating any single design as an automatic policy answer. Evidence requires interpretation of mechanisms, institutions, ethics, and generalizability.
