Homestead and Labor

The 1892 Homestead conflict followed a lockout and effort to break the union at Carnegie Steel while Carnegie was abroad. A confrontation between workers and Pinkerton agents caused deaths and injuries, and state intervention helped defeat the union. The episode sharply contradicts Carnegie's public language of harmony among labor, capital, and ability.
