Sandage used Cepheid variables, bright stars, galaxies, and supernova-related methods to connect nearby distance measurements to the expanding universe.

Each rung depended on calibration and population effects. His revisions showed that precision cosmology advances by finding systematic errors, not simply adding more observations.
