# Citizen Investigation and Digital Publics

After the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, Ai and volunteers gathered names of students killed when school buildings collapsed. The citizen investigation challenged official opacity by turning dispersed testimony and online collaboration into a public archive.

The project shows Ai’s expanded idea of art: collecting names, publishing data, and organizing participants can be aesthetic and civic acts. Digital networks became both creative material and infrastructure for accountability.
