In The Wealth of Nations, specialization raises productivity through skill, saved transition time, and invention. Yet its extent depends on the size and organization of exchange, and extreme repetition can narrow workers' capacities. Smith's political economy therefore connects production to institutions, education, public works, law, and distribution.
