Emancipation and Union

The Emancipation Proclamation declared enslaved people free in areas still in rebellion and authorized Black enlistment in federal service. Limited by its wartime legal basis, it nevertheless changed the conflict's direction and helped prepare the way for nationwide abolition through the Thirteenth Amendment.
