# Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters

Randolph became founding president of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters in 1925. Organizing porters meant confronting a powerful company while building solidarity among workers dispersed across rail routes and vulnerable to retaliation.

The Brotherhood’s development gave Black workers an independent institution within the labor movement. It also established Randolph’s model of combining sustained organization, public argument, and collective bargaining power.
